Dear GhanaWeb reader,
Natural hair discrimination in schools has been endorsed by Achimota School and backed by the Ghana Education Service despite the provisions of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana which guarantee the rights of every Ghanaian to equal education despite their background.
Achimota School is a public institution funded by taxpayers’ money therefore placing its protocols above the constitution without making any room for exceptions is an affront to Ghanaian nationalism as enshrined in the portion of the National Anthem that reads: “Bold to Defend Forever the Cause of Freedom and of Right”.
Unfortunately, the affected Ghanaian students with Rastafarian backgrounds who have been denied access to high school education by the school of their choice (Achimota School) could only seek justice in the court of law or accept offers from schools that are not their choice.
On the happy path, GhanaWeb won another award three months after winning the Best Online Portal award at the Ghana Election Coverage Awards 2020. The portal won the GACA Excellence in Digital Media 2021 Awards on March 27, 2021, for its outstanding service and maintaining consistency, high standards of leadership in the media space. Congratulations to the team for this feat.
