Dear GhanaWeb reader,
It’s been two weeks since you heard from us at the newsletter factory. Indeed, we were deep in the celebration of GhanaWeb’s 22nd anniversary which was launched on February 15 in Accra.
It’s going to be a year-long celebration with activities lined up including community engagement programmes; webinars; product launches; media tours; special awards and recognition; corporate social responsibility activities among many others that would be held under the strict observance of COVID-19 protocols. We will keep you updated.
A celebration that didn’t go down well in the month of love was the opening of an LGBTQ Rights office in Ghana and a fundraiser which was attended by several diplomats who pledged to support the group.
The event immediately provoked a gay rights debate after the Executive Secretary of the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values, Moses Foh-Amoaning, called on the government to shut down the new office.
Ghana’s laws are clearly against “unnatural carnal knowledge” but not clear on whether homosexuality falls within this category or not. However, a majority of the public and social commentators who are against the LGBTQ community are making cultural and religious arguments while the few in support of LGBTQ rights maintain that they are legally binding.
Moses Foh Amoaning, the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) and many other political and opinion leaders have called on the president to close down the new LGBTQ office and take action against supporters of the LGBTQ cause in our democratic space. Until a legal recourse is sought, it remains a debate. Are LGBTQ rights human rights?
The 2020 election petition hearing is also ongoing and GhanaWeb will be here to give you all the news and updates from the grounds to the courts, the parliament, presidency, regions, schools, hospitals and everywhere necessary. We will also be streaming LIVE all day on GhanaWeb TV on www.ghanaweb.com and on YouTube.
